데렉 투말라는 뉴미디어, 비디오, 산업 자재 및 오브제를 사용하는 초학제적 아티스트다. 그는 정치, 상호 연결성, 우주 그리고 과학적 사고를 탐구하기 위해 지식의 모호함을 사용한다. 투말라의 주요 프로젝트는 아트바젤 홍콩, 대만 포모사 아트페어, 말레이시아 페낭 조지타운 페스티벌, FLAME HK 비디오 아트페어, 도쿄 아시아 아트 어워드, 한국 ASEAN 등에서 전시된 바 있다. 또한 그는 필리핀 문화센터, UP Vargas 뮤지엄 및 아트페어 필리핀에서 작품들을 선보였다. 그는 미국 뉴욕 Apexart 펠로우십, 오스트리아 잘츠부르크 글로벌 세미나, 폴란드 Beyond Time Residency 및 Bellas Artes Projects, Flash Residency에 참여한 바 있으며 필리핀 마닐라에서 열린 Ateneo Art Awards 2015에서 그녀의 작품 <성스러운 기하학(Sacred Geometry)>으로 수상했으며, 현재 마닐라 The Drawing Room 전속작가로 활동하고 있다. 또한 투말라는 시즌별로 DJ, VJ, 그리고 Mvltiverse라는 마닐라의 예술 및 테크 분야 테크놀로지스트와 예술가들의 멀티미디어 커뮤니티의 주최자로서도 활동하고 있다.

Derek Tumala is a trans-disciplinary artist working with new media, video, industrial material and objects. Tumala often uses the ambiguity of experience and knowledge in his practice to explore personal politics, interconnectedness, cosmic and scientific thinking. Tumala’s notable artistic projects were presented in Art Basel Hong Kong, Formosa Art Fair Taiwan, Georgetown Festival Penang, Malaysia, FLAME HK Video Art Fair, Asia Art Awards Tokyo, ASEAN Exhibition, South Korea. He has also shown works at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, UP Vargas Museum and Art Fair Philippines. He attended the Apexart Fellowship in New York City, USA, the Salzburg Global Seminar in Austria, Beyond Time Residency in Poland and Flash Residency in Bellas Artes Projects, PH. He got an award for his work Sacred Geometry at the Ateneo Art Awards 2015 in Manila, Philippines. He is currently represented by The Drawing Room in Manila. Derek Tumala is also a seasonal DJ, VJ, and a community organizer founding Mvltiverse, a multimedia collective and steamworks, a collective of technologists & artists working in art and tech in Manila.
